Now why didn't Don Knuth think of that for TeX?

It's by far not the only program that's translated from a pascal-oid into C before being compiled. The Moria game from back in the late 80s was originally written in Pascal and ported to the PC by using a Pascal to C compiler someone had written because it was easier than getting it to compile under Turbo Pascal or something. Though that may have been a one-shot deal. The code has since been rewritten two or three times...
