I am opposed to software monocultures, they stifle attempts to produce new and better implementations and tend to breed discontent among developers that wish to do something different. If we were to accept OpenSSL I would recommend doing so in the same way we have gcompat. It can be used in places where there is need for its specific interface, but otherwise not. My preferred SSL implementation is BoringSSL, though it is unsuitable for use in a distribution.
