It turns out that my vgadb entry was fine and that the
card I'm using (an ASUS V9400-X/TD/64, but perhaps
more generally all Geforce MX4000s) doesn't do DVI
output above 1280x1024. It can do analog output up
to 2048x1536, but no DVI. So I can drive my 1600x1200
flat panel in analog mode (which looks surprisingly good)
but not in digital.

Anyone out there using a DVI card that drives 1600x1200?
I have one GeForce4 MX 440 that seems to do the trick, but
I'm worried that the packaging matters as well as the chipset
and the card is old enough that it's hard to find these days.

Russ

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/Samsung_240T_info.html

"The TMDS signalling in the DVI interface has a maximum bandwidth of
165 Mhz, or 165 Mpixels/s. At 60 Hz this equals to a maximum
resolution of 1920 x 1080 for the display over single TMDS link.
Obviously not enough for a 1920 x 1200 display.

However the standard DVI interface has enough pins for two TMDS links
and there are both displays and cards with a single or dual TMDS
implemented (12 or 24 pins). A dual link DVI interface has double the
bandwidth and therefore a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536."

Maybe?

More interesting info in the article.

no. 1600x1200@60Hz is perfectly fine for a single link DVI with normal
blanking interval. Reduced blanking will give you 1920x1200 over
single link. Depending on a TMDS transmitter, the real bandwidth you
get is about 162Mhz. Russ is on the right track - the card is crap.
