So...I see in the archives that someone, brucee? had
done work on the ps2 and had come up with the e
compiler for the r5900. I'm wondering if there's
source anywhere for the plan 9 port and what the
latest status was with using the GS as a framebuffer,
or something. I've got a ps2 and the linux kit, and,
well, it's got the biggest HD, sure would be a nice
cpu/file server! Thanks

i initially thought `e compiler' was a typo, but it appears twice in
the original message. has brucee developed a language that makes you
happy and increases your empathy? i believe that's banned in the us
under the controlled language analog act.

no, the 5900 is a strange beast. 128 bit registers. sloppy
floating point. missing instructions, blah blah. but it took
only a day to get the compiler working and a day to get
thru l.s (great without a console). then inferno was up and
running. i told mike that i'd better leave it at work or they'd
never see me.

i never used the HD. i can give away the compiler
if i'm allowed to. actually you need 3c as well if
you want to you use the other processor.

What's 3c compile for? I don't recall that one at all, and I thought
the other processor was a mips r3000, so you'd need vc.

Oh master, I have some questions :
what's the boot process for the ps2, does it just boot from cd/dvd rom? Or does it need to be 'chipped' ?
did you get the networking working ?
does it ouput graphics ?
I have an Inferno subscription so presumably I'm licensed for it even if you *can't* put it on general release. :)
Boyd's been enthusing about your Inferno work. It would be interesting/enlightening to see it first hand.

Hmmm. I wish I had a slave to fix pcs for me.
> what's the boot process for the ps2, does it just boot from cd/dvd rom? Or does it need to be 'chipped' ?
no, the box was never opened. you boot linux, and copy redboot
to the cartridge and add an inferno option to the boot menu.
and then serve inferno from a p9 box using tftp.
the inferno image is a hacked elf that redboot likes.
> did you get the networking working ?
oh yeah. a lot better than their driver.
> does it ouput graphics ?
doesn't have draw or tk. the intention is a loadable /dev/fb driver.
it ain't done. would be a great device to import into a p9 box.

ahh, so say I were to subscribe for inferno? e[acl] and 3c available to
me? Can i prod you to do more work on the framebuffer? I think there's a
few of us who are definitely interested in what you've done. Don't keep
it a secret!

you don't need to do that just to get the compilers (as far as we're concerned).

charles has positioned me on this ... i had no time to examine
the document fully but i think i can give the stuff away.
please tell me wrong mr lawyer.
i know i can give away a better 8c ... it's cleaner this time
because i remember the false paths i went thru to solve stuff.
i even remembered not to get fkd by peep, but maybe
cause presto told me that it was a prob with the alpha.

sounds excellent. now i beseech thee: point me to it! I'll give a go at
porting whatever possible to the ps2 with your compiler. there are some
homebrew hdd libs around as well, maybe I'll have a look-see. thanks

realistically - if you just wanna port a lot of stuff to the ps2
just run with linux. it's already done and the results are as
expected - i.e. the ps2 is not as good as a cheap pc for
most applications. the ps2 graphics engine is very good and
well documented - the memory sub-system is great.
no need for a "homebrew hdd lib" - it'll drive you insane.
my ps2 inferno has a small sac fs (in an elf segment - eat
my shorts redboot) and imports resources that aren't
worth the battle - e.g. fs from emelie at the time.

If you mean specific machines, next time I'm in town I'll bring a screwdriver
If you mean the PC platform, next time I'm in town I'll bring a hammer
