Having played around for a while, I took the plunge and installed on a real machine - the instructions on the Wiki are straightforward to follow, and I was lucky enough to have just about no problems except a slight hiccup configuring the screen resolution. (As a bonus, the installation found a 1GB partition I never knew I had. Thanks guys.)
