thanks to vic thacker i have a PCMCIA card which
claims to be based of the the realtek 8139 but, as
per usual, these damn vaio's don't find 'em.
this is the card:

that's what i'll do next. i'm waiting for this fossil install.
i think i posted some VAIO pci patch a few months back.
