Downloaded the latest raspi plan9 img, copied it onto an empty SD card, ethernet is connected.
It gets stuck in a loop complaining about a missing /boot/kfs file server.
Any hints?

Are there any other error messages before that one? Please quote
exact content if you can.
My guess is that the copy onto SD card did not succeed completely
and the fossil filesystem is missing or damaged.

Good guess :-)
The confusion was in the meaning of copying the 9pi.img onto the SD card.
Not dragging the content into a formatted SD card, but rather using
dd bs=1m if=9pi.img of=/dev/disk1
That worked.
