Hmm. Wonder if Rob Pike would just as soon be known as the co-creator of
Linux as long as he's the "co-creator" of Unix? Or possibly some other OS
maybe?

On closer inspection the code that exists was written
by reverse engineering packet snifs, and though this can
be fun, in my experience it is often depressing -
unpublished protocols being liable to change.

Interestingly it is not clear what gmail's buisness model will be.
I thought there would be subtle advertising, in a similar vein to
google's search engine, hence the lack of an API pushing
users to use a web browser. Recently however there have been hints
that they may allow pop3 access and then start charging for access.
I would probably pay for a 1Gb of reliable network attached
storage - I am less likely to forget my password than lose
(another) USB key.
