I usually add these to my document

.FP lucidasans
.de EX
.SM
.CW
.DS
..
.de EE
.DE
.R
.LG
..

And then use .EX and .EE around code examples (concept
lifted from the man macros).

This is from memory, its probably more pedantic/verbose
than necessary, but it works.
