Does > colors really hardcoded in applications under Plan 9? Yes. You're approaching Plan 9 from an angle where it is particularly recalcitrant, with good reason. But explaining the details would take those who know a lot of time and effort, so you may have to do a lot of digging yourself. Suffice it to say that in my experience no one is so unhappy with the way Plan 9 imposes its way on the UI, specifically where colours are concerned, to bother coding the endless flexibility that would be required to address your preferences. ++L
