note that those files are append-only.
logs on unix are writeable by everyone:
[rminnich@Panzer ~]$ logger -p kern.err "JUNK"
[rminnich@Panzer ~]$ sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
Mar 16 04:15:03 Panzer rminnich: JUNK
