as users of the old release begin to move to the new one, it
might be helpful to start building a document (all right, web page)
that summarises the differences between the old
release and the new that require source code changes.
incompatibilities that will be detected by recompilation --
such as changed parameters to mount -- aren't too important;
i am thinking of things like the change to `errstr', which now
reads its parameter before it updates it, requiring an initialisation
where previously none was required.
