    Ok, I will take another look.

    I also thought it was peculiar that sd!1 was not picked up as a
boot device but then I have no idea what criterion is being applied nor
by whom.

    For that matter, I don't have a clear idea of what plan9/B
*exactly* what `B' is trying to do.

    Also, just now I noticed something about my plan9.init that
strikes me as suspicious, namely, the `rootdir' specification.

    Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.

    Cheers!

1) the plan9 home page http://plan9.att.com/plan9/ mentions the ftp archive
   which includes the man pages;
2) follow the link on the home page for the distribution and then for installing
   the distribution. that page has a link to the b.com(8) page.

    What does this mean "are available"?

    Available for downloading?

    Available for on-line browsing (which I have tried and only gets me
"can't access document" messages from lynx)?

    Thank you.

    Eureka!

    Amazing!

    Using `lynx' (in reverse order of occurrence):

  4.  -- You selected:  Plan 9's B.COM(8)

  3. -- You selected: Installing the Plan 9 Distribution

  2.  -- You selected:   Plan 9 Distribution

  1.  -- You selected:   Plan 9 Index

  0. -- You selected: ATT Bell Laboratories Computing Research home
page

      Please allow me to apologize for my outburst.

      Thank you!

man b.com. man pages are available at http://plan9.att.com/plan9/mansearch.html.

this name is within the boot device so does not require a 'device!ctrlno' prefix.

don't see anything obviously wrong with this (why doesn't sd!1 show up as a
boot device?). to get 'error walking to 9dos' one of the elements in the
path has to show up either as a non-directory or could not be found in the
directory scan (i.e. 'plan9' isn't being found in c:). this is surprising
because the files were obviously put there by plan9 during the first part
of the installation.

check the disc isn't corrupt.

copy the plan9.ini and 9dos files to the root of c: and then try
	plan9\b sd!0!9dos

it's a mystery.

   Hello.

   I took a first crack at installing the plan9 demo on my PC
yesterday.

   Schematically:

	Boot from Disk 1	OK
	Create c:\plan9, etc	OK
	Create plan9.ini	OK (see below)
	Remove disk 1 & reboot	???

   That is, after I reboot to DOS and give the command

	C:>plan9\B

instead of the next stage of the installation process, I get the error
message

        "error walking to 9dos"

and it asks me where to "boot from" so I gave it sd!0!/plan9/9dos but
I got the same error message back.

   Here is what it says it sees:

scsi devices:
-----------------
scsi0 = dos C: drive
scsi1 = dos D: drive
scsi2 = dos E: <----------- this is where I want to install plan9
scsi3 = dos F:
scsi4 = dos H: (Texel cdrom)

boot devices:
-----------------
fd!1
sd!0
sd!2
sd!3

   Here is a directory listing of C:\plan9:
