May I suggest the following:

Try plan9.

If you like the plan9 user interface (rc, sam, 8 1/2),
install rc, sam and 9term on your Unix systems.
Enjoy life.

If you don't like the user interface,
install *nix over-top your plan9 partition.
Go back to enjoying life.
