Aha!  That would explain it.  Thank you.

This leads me to another question: should I be able to install the CD
distribution from my SoundBlaster CD, or should I expect to run into
the same lack of a #m interface?  (I've been using pcdist only to
ensure that my hardware is Plan9 compatible, before paying real
money.)
