Ah, that has the right sort of ring to it.
The machine is an old DECpc 425sx, which has a 486sz processor.
It is a long time since I worried about co-processor stuff, and
I was sort of thinking along the lines of 486s having FP build
in. Could it be that the low cost SX version was without it?
I did, incidentally, manage to get my old Sun SS2 to boot off the
same file server, and the man/troff stuff works fine.
In any case, whatever the deficiency in the PC, the system isn't
handling it very elegantly.
