i believe the installation program /sys/lib/pcdist/src/install.c
really does use /n/c/plan9, not /n/c:/plan9.
i think i have seen the effects described
when installing onto a window95 machine where the disc layout
was unusual.  the student had a complex disc configuration.
i can't remember precisely, but i vaguely recall
it had something to do with his having moved all the drive
numbers round logically at either the bios or windows level,
which seemed to cause 9dos to look in one place but
install to look in the other).
