Why do you think our original Unix editor was called 'ed'? We're thinking of renaming acid, 'necromania'. --upas-ldqcdfkqaeketxbhulxbqsbkxu Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Received: from plan9.cs.bell-labs.com ([135.104.9.2]) by plan9; Tue Oct 8 22:57:16 EDT 2002 Received: from mail.cse.psu.edu ([130.203.4.6]) by plan9; Tue Oct 8 22:57:15 EDT 2002 Received: from psuvax1.cse.psu.edu (psuvax1.cse.psu.edu [130.203.18.6]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id 6F5DE19ABE; Tue, 8 Oct 2002 22:57:07 -0400 (EDT) Delivered-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu Received: from mailnw.centurytel.net (mailnw.centurytel.net [209.206.160.237]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id E251C19ABB for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Tue, 8 Oct 2002 22:56:12 -0400 (EDT) Received: from term4e (pppoe-64-91-102-37.rb.gh.centurytel.net [64.91.102.37]) by mailnw.centurytel.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with SMTP id g992uAdt011744 for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Tue, 8 Oct 2002 19:56:11 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <00bc4710a58f2c0330a93c330b2c8ef4@centurytel.net> To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu From: "Skip Tavakkolian" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: [9fans] Origin of glenda, movies and dog food Sender: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu Errors-To: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu X-BeenThere: 9fans@cse.psu.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu List-Id: Fans of the OS Plan 9 from Bell Labs <9fans.cse.psu.edu> List-Archive: Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 19:14:19 -0400 A lot of us, outside of the Bell Labs, have speculated that there is a game of association at play, with references (obvious and not so obvious) to various Ed Wood movies as well as other cult classics. Nobody is sure about this because the Labs guys have protected the details of their inside joke better than the Pentagon protected their invasion plans for Somalia. There are several such pun/associations. Have fun finding them for yourself. BTW, anybody else consider the movie "Welcome to Woop Woop" 9-pun-worthy? > P.S. I'm just curious -- does name 'glenda' have exactly the same origin as > 'Plan 9' itself, or am I stretching my imagination too far ? --upas-ldqcdfkqaeketxbhulxbqsbkxu--
