Acme and sam are both graphical editors,
and thus need a frame buffer.  They don't
start for the same reason rio does not.

You can edit files in text mode using ed.

The only file you should need to edit is
vgadb, which is copied in from the root
of the floppy at boot time, so you can just
edit it using any system that can read DOS
disks.
