The -a flag is passed to sprog by acme's spell program (/acme/bin/aspell). It expects the input to be in the right form, properly labeled, and preserves it on output. Spell does nothing of the kind. The simplest fix is to remove -a from the man page, which I've done locally, until a better architecture (that is, one that doesn't use deroff) comes to mind. -rob
