I didn't have any trouble installing the distribution on my thinkpad 600E.  It worked
first try right out of the box.

I installed it on the last partition, Linux and Win98 take up the first three.
I installed from the distribution on the Linux ext2fs filesystem (nor did I
have to place it in the root directory like someone else on this list mentioned
having to do to get the install from ext2 to work.

Are you saying that the install boot floppy isn't finding the disk?
