this depends on what your ISP's policy on
how they determine what connections to keep
up. the ISP i've got now looks at any bits,
and keeps the link up (to 8 hrs). i've used
ones in the past that looked at only TCP or
TCP and UDP, or excluded certain ports to
discourage just such connection-holding.

if you're running upas/fs anyway, try a
periodic cat of a file there > /dev/null or
just an ls -l > /dev/null.
