what is the significance of the abovementioned device?

i am trying to connect to the auth server from a different p9 box
(standalone terminal) and receive errors when using the normal p9
authentication mechanism. the error mentions /dev/authenticator but not
  much else.

That usually means the password your terminal
has (from boot time) and the password your auth
server thinks it should have don't agree.

That is, you probably mistyped your password at boot.
Try retyping it with aux/typepasswd.

Russ

netkey auth works fine... cpu commands works fine when issued from the
auth box to itself (i.e. cpu -h localhost -c blabla)...

ultimately i would like to setup 2 cpu servers on the same network, but
this has to wait until i can fully authenticate to the first one...

also, documentation seems to be lacking on setting up a fileserver.
wouldn't mind receiving some pointers with that too :)
