No, you're right; it is a local problem. But a solution might fix a bunch of local problems. :-) A filesystem to handle the keyboard is my best guess, but that isn't gaining a lot of favor. I agree, though, that putting the programmability into the kernel isn't a good solution.... - Dan C.
