Sounds like the modem is working fine.
It's been a long time since I played with ppp.
That said, your server might not support PPP authentication.
When you log in to the remote server manually, you're
doing some sort of text-based back and forth.
The -s option is for PPP authentication which is
some binary back and forth. If dialing 5551234
doesn't start PPP automatically on connect, I wouldn't
expect to be able to use -s. But it's been a while.
