I think there is his new driver at his web site now (I've just downloaded:-)

The strange thing is that the manufacturers people
claim to have trouble getting information from
differ from person to person, as illustrated by the
varying availability of support for recent ATI and
Nvidia products.

You sound as though you don't believe the claims.
My experience has certainly been that it's hard to
get the info out of the manufacturers, especially
after you mention that you want to distribute
the source for the driver you write.

Alas, the Rage 128 is not supported.
*Some* ATI Xpert 98 products (probably not the "value" versions) work
fine.
I recently changed from Xpert 98 to Nvidia GeForce 2, which required
some
modification and rebuilding (but at least the driver was provided).

This whole PC video business is disgusting. Xi Graphics sells an X
server
to replace the native Solaris x86 version, which supports a lot of cards
(including I think Rage 128) but not GeForce 2. Everybody always claims
that what they haven't supported is due to not getting information out
of
the video card (or chip) manufacturer. (SunSoft now supports the
XFree86
video drivers, via an add-on package, on Solaris x86, and thus they now
"support" more cards I care about than any other product that I know
of.)
