Alt is a separate keystroke not a modifier.
"Press down alt, let go of alt, type : )"
Not "press down alt, type : ), let go of alt".
Plan 9 doesn't care but drawterm does (because of
the way the underlying platforms handle things).

Linux drawterm does not seem to make this distinction: Atl-: ) works
just as well as Alt : )

solaris drawterm seems to work like the linux one in this respect.

I think the separate alt only matters on Windows.
Windows grabs Alt-char way early and tries to
process it as bringing down a menu or some
other shortcut. There's probably a way around it,
but I don't know what it is.
