The bandwidth is large enough to encompass a number of slow to medium speed devices so there is hope that it will eliminate some of the other holes. Practice seems to be that it is replacing a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse hole in some but not all machines. I expect that it'll keep going and replace the serial ports too. As such I'm a happy camper. From an implementation point of view, the bus is beyong baroque and manufacturers have been slow to release the protocols needed to drive devices on the USB. That means that, once again, we'll be behind the curve as we try to pry details out to get working the devices that we had working before USB. --upas-taebzikmricnxjygecuneqikwe Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Received: from mail.cse.psu.edu ([130.203.4.6]) by plan9; Tue Nov 6 14:20:21 EST 2001 Received: from psuvax1.cse.psu.edu (psuvax1.cse.psu.edu [130.203.4.6]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id C805F199ED; Tue, 6 Nov 2001 14:20:09 -0500 (EST) Delivered-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu Received: from frontdoor.mbmnz.co.nz (210-55-57-168.adsl.xtra.co.nz [210.55.57.168]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id 6B4C0199B5 for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Tue, 6 Nov 2001 14:19:10 -0500 (EST) Received: from MERCURY ([192.168.0.63]) by frontdoor.mbmnz.co.nz with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.1600); Wed, 7 Nov 2001 05:26:05 +1300 Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.20011107081656.009b52a8@pop3.clear.net.nz> X-Sender: mbml/andrew@pop3.clear.net.nz X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu From: Andrew Simmons In-Reply-To: <20011106104422.BF33A19A4D@mail.cse.psu.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-OriginalArrivalTime: 06 Nov 2001 16:26:05.0154 (UTC) FILETIME=[BB708C20:01C166DF] Subject: [9fans] Re: USB Sender: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu Errors-To: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu X-BeenThere: 9fans@cse.psu.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.6 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu List-Id: Fans of the OS Plan 9 from Bell Labs <9fans.cse.psu.edu> List-Archive: Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001 08:16:56 +1300 >boyd@fr.inter.net (Boyd Roberts) writes: > >> The new fad seems to be USB mice. As one of the three Macintosh users left, I've been using a USB mouse, keyboard, printer, and digital camera for at least two years without a single problem. --upas-taebzikmricnxjygecuneqikwe--
