Umm, everything _is_ based on PCM audio samples.
Divorcing devaudio from the soundblaster isn't
a bad idea by itself though.
(And while I'm writing, the interface for things
like 9pccd isn't quite as uniform and consistent
as you might guess from my posting. It only worked
because someone anticipated the need to do that.
Grep for 9660srv in /sys/src/9/port/*.)
