I think you'll have to copy your yesterday / to /3e and then use
rootdir to select /3e as your root dir.
At least, that was my plan.

Just to add a little noise to the signal -- thanks!

(I was just about to ask some followup questions which now
have been obviated -- anyway, I won't touch the fs until I
 have read your followup notes.)

Btw, Thanks also for the smooth install procedure!
Axel.

just to make that less ambiguous: i kept the file system but
did
	for(a in all-but-adm){mv $a 3e_$a}
then installed, then once i'd copied changes from lib/ndb,
cpurc, termrc, and a few other essential changes for my system,
i removed the 3e_* directories, leaving only a 4th edition system,
with 3rd edition in the dump along with 2nd and possibly even
a 1st-and-a-bit.

DON'T rush off to try it without careful investigation. that part's fine, but there is much more
to do to install onto a file server. there are several little traps
for the unwary. i'll post a longer note about what i did
a bit later, once i'm awake.

that's what i did: after all, how likely is it that i'll go back?
the old source is still in the dump, and if i ever need to run
something under 3rd edition, perhaps as a regression test,
i decided i could probably set something up to take / from
the right directory in /n/dump/2002/... and paste a few
writable directories onto that.

that way as well i can see back through all editions using history.

I still have to make my first 4th ed installation,
but I'm looking ahead to how to 'upgrade' the fs,
(and not even thought about cpu/auth server) and
have the feeling I'm probably missing the obvious.

I understand the on-disk format is the same,
and the kernel speaks both 9P and 9P2000.

But, how do people convert their real (fake worm) fs?
(converted by booting the new kernel)
I mean: how/where to add the 4th ed files without mixing
them with the 3rd ed ones, such that root file systems
for both resp. 3rd ed and 4th ed are (can be) offered?
Somehow the effect should be something like Russ
described for the kfs filesystem, where the 3rd ed
files are moved to /3e
Or is the trick to add a new 'fresh' filsys for 4th ed?
(but that would waste the space already allocated for
 the 'current' main filsys).
Or just give up on 3th ed files? (I won't believe that :-)

Thanks,
Axel - who will now first try to install on a kfs-based
       Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop
