I'm sure TFM has the explanation buried in it, but maybe someone can
short-circuit my search:
I'm getting
error+
error+ Mail to `proxima.alt.za!lucio' from 'mykonos.proxima.alt.za!root' failed.
error+ The error message was:
error+ can't lock mail file
log entries when attempting to deliver mail to /mail/box/lucio/mbox.
I presume it's permissions related, but none of the permissions I
thought would be obvious actually look wrong to me.
I did use "mail -c" to reconstruct the mailbox after renaming it,
hoping that would correct the problem, but with no improvement.

Except that I had
d-rwxrwxr-x M 24 sys sys 0 Jan 31 18:08 /mail
d-rwxrwxr-x M 24 upas upas 0 Feb 28 11:59 /mail/box
d-rwxrwx--- M 24 lucio upas 0 Jun 23 11:28 /mail/box/lucio
and it seems reasonable to
chmod o+rx /mail/box/lucio
as well. It made all the difference, as one might expect.
Apologies for wasting bandwidth.
