Except that I had
d-rwxrwxr-x M 24 sys sys 0 Jan 31 18:08 /mail
d-rwxrwxr-x M 24 upas upas 0 Feb 28 11:59 /mail/box
d-rwxrwx--- M 24 lucio upas 0 Jun 23 11:28 /mail/box/lucio
and it seems reasonable to
chmod o+rx /mail/box/lucio
as well. It made all the difference, as one might expect.
