While I agree the sort ordering on names is terrible, I'd argue the "ugly all-numeric dashed dates" are actually more desirable than the traditional Unix format, because they are more sortable. With traditional Unix date strings you get into all sorts of ugly contortions if you want to run them through sort(1). System V added a -M option to sort to do grok month names, but it is still unpleasant.
