For me, the bottom line is utility -- sure, I may be living in a hovel, but I can at least have some nice tools to make life a little less brutish. Not everyone gets to decide what OS they use, and not everyone has "advocate plan 9" at the top of their list of priorities. I think people resist the idea of porting software to plan 9 because there's a certain idealism to the system -- it would be silly to port Mozilla, for instance, because the design of Mozilla is in opposition to the principles of 9. On the other hand, modern Unix seems to be without any such principles, so why not humor those who rely on it for their livelihood. - Richard
