I believe there is a config option (command) that will change ATA disks such that they subsequently require a command to start. i.e. they power up in the powersave mode, and need the normal 'leave power save mode' command to get them going. Though I also believe the command (feature set subset if I recall) is optional anyway. (I spent too long working on ATA disk drivers ~ 8 years ago) DF
