[9fans] OT: plan9port question

[I RATTAN]

I installed plan9port (latest version) under Linux (2.6.7 kernel).
PATH=$PLAN9/bin:$PATH

and use of ls produces the Usage: xxx message (Plan9 one)

PATH=$PATH:$PLAN9/bin

Linux ls works and $PLAN9/bin/ls also works..

Any ideas?

You'll almost certainly be better off with putting it at the end
of your path.

What does alias ls say?  You're probably passing
some bogous (colorization?) options from the
system shell initialization scripts.

Run "9 man 9.rc" for more information.

what shell are you using?
perhaps you've got an alias set up for ls?

not sure i fully understand this but the shell could be caching
executable pathnames to avoid the $PATH walk.

remember csh's 'rehash' command?

... which bash definitely does.

lappie. cat >bin/foo

ENOPARSE.  The hash builtin lets you force the
shell to re-examine the path.  I didn't comment
on whether or not I thought it was a good idea.

I am trying to install it under Solaris-5.9

and by default ./INSTALL seems to look for sun compiler
/usr/ucb/cc

is there a way to make it use gcc?

set the environment variable $CC9 to gcc.

Can gdb be used to debug plan9 executables or one has
to learn acid?

If you mean can gdb be used to debug /usr/local/plan9/bin/*
on a Unix system, the answer is yes it can.
