IMHO the first good step would be teaching SANE to speak 9P
(as replacement for its own protocol), then split it off into
several packages - moving drivers to their own processes and
step by step port the whole thing to Plan9 (maybe through the
linux emulation).

Maybe this could be combined with my suggested 9P camera stuff ;-)
