The 4.2 branch of VirtualBox was known to have a bug with real mode
which prevented to run Plan 9 (and QNX) successfully. This bug was
fixed in VirtualBox 4.2.14, as you can see in the changelog.

If you want to run Plan 9 on VirtualBox, you have to use either
the 4.1 branch (for example 4.1.26) or 4.2.14 and later.
