I forgot one thing that is not blatantly apparent..
in python-2.5.1-ape you must modify ALL mkfiles and add
-D_SUSV2_SOURCE because of things like...
#ifndef _SUSV2_SOURCE
#error "inttypes.h is SUSV2"
#endif
that
