A similar product was introduced by a japanese company called Buffalo
recently at the CeBIT fair: Model HD-H1.OTGL/R5, ~900 Euros, 4 disks, 1
Terabyte in RAID0/1/5, Gigabit eth, linux-based, no ATAoE but that
should be subject to SW.

And here's a quick summary of the difference.

EtherDrive storage blades use AoE the talk to block storage.
They are not nas boxes.
They are like sans only each drive can be seen on the network.
Each blade is a complete server with its own Ethernet interface.
The shelf has no common equipment; just power supply and a couple of
fans.
Blades can be raided across any number of shelves; you can
stripe 30 blades together if you wish while the shelf only
holds 10 blades.
You never have to spill a file system like using nas boxes;
just keep adding shelves and making your file system bigger.

I don't want to get into a commercial for EtherDrive storage blades,
so you might want to read the white paper.

any reason why it is not AoIP (i mean ATA over IP)? that way it would be
even more flexible. i am sure you have a reason behind but would like to
know why you chose not to use ip. i think a skinny IP/UDP is a good choice
too. i guess it is time to read the coraid paper!

We started with the idea to just do what was needed; do one thing
well, that sort of thinking.  We wanted to connect disks to local
systems so we just needed data link layer, not network layer.
We can still forward AoE thru tunnels if required and we don't
have to manage IP address spaces.  In fact, there is no configuration
for the blades at all, just plug them in.  You do have to set an address
for each shelf with dip switches.

thanks for the document. the product is really interesting. for one of our
products in my previous company we were looking for such a server.

btw, can you or someone give an approximate price of the product for a
bare minimum configuration? i am wondering whether a home plan9 user can
afford it at all? the rack mount slightly scares me about 1. price, and 2.
noise.

FWIW, Offmyserver sells these kinds of things too, though ours
doesn't work over ethernet (it's just a standard fiber channel
slash SCSI thing) and since I don't do hardware stuff there, I
don't know if the price is accurate (the prices on the site are
usually much higher than we quote by email / phone). The product
we sell starts at $6,000. I don't know if that includes disks. I
should probably ask, shouldn't I? :)

I'll also ask if we have this kind of NAS stuff.

a single blade can plug into that allows people to play with
a single drive.  We list that for $285 including the blade.
I'll get you one for $150.  (A dharani only price)

AoE is a really light protocol for wrapping ATA commands in
Ethernet frames.  The EtherDrive blade is a nanoserver
that sits on the network serving AoE and issuing ATA commands
to its attached disk.  The shelf provides a way for each blade
to get its power and physical ethernet port.

So you plug each EtherDrive into a switch, yourself into the
(same) switch, and you access the disks -- whether it's ten or
ten thousand.

As an aside, since AoE is just a wrapper for the ATA commands,
you can take a disk out of a machine, put it on an ED blade,
and remount it over the network.

So to answer your question, from the client side a full
shelf looks like ten disks.

We're currently developing raid / volume management software
for plan 9 for our raidblade product.  It should be released
within the month.

I think Russ was joking, but accessing a WORM jukebox via ATA would
presumably require ATAPI, to get access to the SCSI CCS or MMC command
set, whatever it's called (the one that controls jukeboxes).  I've
never heard of an ATA(PI) WORM jukebox and it wouldn't help with
existing SCSI WORM jukeboxes, such as mine.

In any event, SCSI, ATA and AoE should all be able to coexist in one
kernel.

No limits within reason.  I'll have a hard time if someone orders
30 shelves!!  Jim will kill me! :)

You can have more than 1 eval at that price.

I just hate expensive eval boards!  We are working on a new
board with a Cirrus part and they want $2,500 for the eval
card, that is similar to the card that Ron is using  that costs $150.
I want to sell stuff in a way that I would want to buy it.
