Is it not possible to use a single utility that recognises the nature of the archive? Enhanced Unix "tar" utilities all seem to be able to do it. I haven't explored how it is implemented, but I recall vaguely a discussion in one of the NetBSD mailing lists about trivially adding bunzipping to TAR a long time ago. ++L ++L
