I saw this hang in all my vmware plan 9 virtual
machines after I upgraded to vmware 4.5.  Somehow the
behavior persisted even after I reverted back to vmware
4.0.5.  (I was able to boot the plan 9 install floppy
image in 4.5.)

After I removed from the virtual machines all devices
except disk, NIC, and memory I could boot them in 4.0.5
again.
