echo dma on >/dev/sdCx/ctl
will help a lot.
Having said that, the initial snapshot of a 35 GB file system still took 40 hours
(but everything -- fossil, arenas, index -- was on one disk (a temporary
necessity to free up disk space elsewhere)).
