The essential thing is that Plan 9 is the result of evolution
of the original Unix system used by the researchers who invented
Unix and the Blit bitmapped terminal, so it reflects considerable
further development and refinement of those ideas.  Other systems
are based on other ideas (e.g. Windows) or are based on an older
version of this evolutionary chain (e.g. Linux).

The central ideas in Plan 9 are explained in the introductory
paper on the Plan 9 web site:
