It was asymmetric; interrupts were all handled on the same processor. It's interesting that there was a time period during which minicomputer speed was essentially topped out (around 1 MIPS), so it made sense to work on speed-improvement hacks. But in later years, processor speed increased while prices dropped at such a rate that such hackery became uneconomic.
