Well, it can't, because the mouse doesn't look at the keyboard. What did look at the keyboard was the real-mode mouse driver software installed on MS-DOS. On this note, notice that increasingly often, keyboards, mice, etc. that one buys in stores like Best Buy are designed with the assumption that one is going to use them with Windows, so they include all sorts of features that DO NOT WORK under other OSes. Be forewarned.
