I've often wished there were a standard device interface (more or less like 9P) so one could have *real* plug-and-play across *all* platforms without having to write device drivers more than once per device. If this industry were ultra-rational it could happen, but unfortunately it's in a rush to make profits using existing crufty platforms, a very short-sighted view about which nothing can be done, apparently.
