You should take your own advice and "get real". It has been quite evident that Lucent doesn't expect to make a profit from Plan 9 as such. But in the real world, potential litigation is an important concern. Nobody, corporation or otherwise, should be expected to do good deeds with the expectation of getting screwed for doing so.
