It means "the $PLAN9 directory" to open and Bopen. It was a mistake (it's too hard to contain, and it makes ported programs different from normal programs; same mistake as handling dotdot specially in some programs but not others). I'm going to rid the tree of these references. But it should be working right now. Russ
