Interestingly, most of the people I've been talking to were
only been thinking of going to Usenix for either social or plan9 reasons,
and have been put off by the outrageous prices.

I think cheap-and-friendly is the way to go:
get a bunch of 9ers together with:
* a network (or Matt and an RJ-45)
* some beer and soft drinks
* some food

If someone has a reasonable sized house and the will to do it,
it could be done there,
otherwise it'll take some cash and a school hall or similar.

Ditto me.
I learned more from talking to people and looking over Charles Forsyth's
shoulder for ~1.5 days than I would have from a week of tutorials.

I keep unashamedly pushing the community aspect of this.
I've never organised anything in my life before,
but I managed it fine _and_ made some new friends and all that stuff.

I had 3 fans I'd never met before staying with me for the weekend:
(they got to do some sightseeing and stuff too),
and I had a great time shooting the breeze with a bunch of people
I'd never met or hadn't seen for 20 years.

Well, I'll be in NY one way or another sometime this year (he said
ominously).

Deffo. Run with it.
Find 3 9fans in your area and go out for a beer.
You _know_ you've got stuff in common
(even if it's only differing views on vector products).

Cheers,
    Dave.

P.S. I suppose we could do a side event at Unsenix and call it unusenix
or 9ix.
Old farts could swap stories about chronic RK-05 syndrome
(symptoms: asymmetric arm development and a sideways lean),
and the young-uns could talk about modding a glenda-shaped PC case.
